Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia reginae)

Bird of Paradise
Also known as the crane flower, it takes years for a new plant to bloom.

Tips for making it bloom

  • The most important thing is to make sure the plant is getting as much sunlight as possible. Bird of Paradise likes almost full sun and may not bloom in shade.
  • Water often, keeping the soil moist. If your plant is indoors, make sure it dries out between waterings, but outdoor plants will want to stay pretty damp. Never let the roots stay saturated – but this usually isn’t a problem outside during the Florida summer.
  • Fertilize it more often – once a month in the winter, and twice a month in the summer.
  • Keep the base cleared of dead leaves, grass and weeds. Some people even report that they bloom better if the top of the roots are slightly exposed.
  • Don’t divide or repot the plant too often – it may keep the blooms away for years.
